Paul L. Whalen Named President-Elect of Soane Foundation Board

Paul L. Whalen Named President-Elect of Soane Foundation Board
The Board of Directors of the Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation in New York announced that Paul L. Whalen, AIA, Partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, has been named President-Elect, to take office in January 2018.

"After a thoughtful search for a new leader who is well known and highly respected in the field of architecture, we were pleased that Paul, an influential architect in his own right, has agreed to take on the challenge," said Thomas A. Kligerman, the Foundation's current President. "His energy and his ideas will be invaluable, and he will have the enthusiastic support of the Board as together we continue to develop and expand the Foundation's programs and outreach."

"Sir John Soane was an architect who understood his place in history, perhaps the most important reason for his outsize influence," said Mr. Whalen in accepting his election. "His house museum is a singular physical expression of a very original architect. Supporting the Sir John Soane's Museum and carrying forward Soane's work as a teacher and mentor to generations of younger architects is where the mission of the Soane Museum Foundation in New York comes alive for me. I look forward to leading a collegial group of people who continue to imagine ways of pushing forward all that there is to learn from Soane, his architecture, his house, and his life."

Mr. Whalen joined Robert A.M. Stern Architects in 1981 and has been a Partner of the firm since 1989. During this time, he has been responsible for the design and management of projects including the record-setting 15 Central Park West and was partner-in-charge of two of the most influential planning projects of our time: the new town of Celebration, Florida, and a plan and guidelines that revived the theater block of New York City's 42nd Street. He also co-leads the firm's work in China.

Mr. Whalen graduated from Columbia University and received his Master of Architecture degree from Princeton University. He serves on the Board of Directors of the New York Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism. For more information about Mr. Whalen and his work, please click here.
