RAMSA Partner Paul L. Whalen to Lead AIA Conference Tour of 42nd Street Theater Block

RAMSA Partner Paul L. Whalen to Lead AIA Conference Tour of 42nd Street Theater Block

On Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 8:30 AM, during the June 21-23 AIA Conference on Architecture in New York City, RAMSA Partner Paul L. Whalen will lead a tour of the theater block of New York's 42nd Street.

Since 1992, when the 42nd Street Development Corporation invited our team of architects and designers to provide an interim plan to jump start the revitalization of the theater block, which in its abandoned condition had become an embarrassingly visible symbol of New York's decline, we have remained intimately involved with the development of guidelines for the block and we continue to participate regularly in design review meetings as consultants. Over the years, our scope broadened to include the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the New York Times site on Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets. Forty second Street is reborn, but remains true to its nature: it is once again secure as New York's premier democratic entertainment center and a widely studied model for urban redevelopment worldwide.

Mr. Whalen will discuss his work on the project, 42nd Street Now!, as well as the district's continually evolving landscape. For more information on 42nd Street Now, please click here. Mr. Whalen will be joined in leading the tour by Dan Kaplan of FXCollaborative and a representative from the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The theater block includes towers by firms including Skidmore, Ownings & Merrill, Cook + Fox Architects, and Renzo Piano Building Workshop. For more information about the tour, please click here.
