Firm Profile

Overview • How We Work • Sustainable DesignOffice Culture

We know that no two projects are alike and that, as much as our past experience can inform our work process, we must always start each new project with an open mind and a clean slate. Our work process is very participatory, by which we mean that you will see a lot of us. We will put much effort into coming to understand who you are; what your goals, needs, and motivations may be; and how these may be best supported by the building or buildings we will design for you.

We generally look at many options during the early design phases. We will discuss these options with you and work with you to assess their relative advantages and disadvantages. We are not the kind of architects who will arrive on your doorstep with a single, highly-developed design and resist all change to that design – this is your project, and part of the thrill of the chase for us is to find out who you are and how this design can be uniquely appropriate to your needs. Nonetheless, we will stick to our guns. You come to us for our professional experience and big-picture thinking, and so we will push you and challenge you in an effort to find approaches that neither you nor we would find on our own.

We understand that many projects have diverse stakeholders who bring to a project different, and at times conflicting, interests. We understand this team dynamic and are proud of our ability to facilitate the team discussions which lead to an optimal design solution. Our proposed project team members are proven consensus-builders.

We use a variety of presentation techniques during a project, emphasizing techniques that are most appropriate to the issues at hand. We use physical models extensively, starting with rough plasticine models during the early phases of a project and evolving to larger and more detailed models during later phases. We are sophisticated computer users and bring a variety of virtual and three dimensional rendering and animation tools to our projects.

We are quantitative and analytic in our methods and will present scoring, weighting, and optimizing analyses which will allow you to assess the advantages and disadvantages of a spectrum of design options.

We believe strongly that a project must be actively managed in a forward looking and goal oriented way. We will develop a detailed work plan at the start of your project. This work plan will parallel your project's schedule and both the schedule and work plan will be reevaluated and updated frequently.

The result will be a lasting physical representation of your values, identity, and commitment to quality.
