Today the University of Nebraska celebrates the opening of the newly constructed Howard L. Hawks Hall, the new home of the University's College of Business. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the building increases the College's visibility on the University of Nebraska's Lincoln campus while reinforcing the existing campus fabric.
A glass-clad cube at the corner of 14th Street and Vine Street is the public face of the building, displaying the College’s showcase spaces and creating a ceremonial entrance from Memorial Mall. Framing the cube, two masonry-clad wings containing offices and classrooms flank a central four-story atrium that features a large glassy lobby with sculptural stairs that lead up and down to the classroom floors. A ground floor café and two-story gallery provide gathering and collaboration spaces that offer views to a large pedestrian plaza connecting Howard L. Hawks Hall to the adjacent Kauffman Center. “We have worked on this project for five years, and moving into the space is creating a new sense of pride and motivation,” said Rik Barrera, Associate Dean and Chief Operating Officer for the college. “It will be a wonderful place to go to class, work, study, visit with colleagues and friends, get something to eat and hang out. This building will strengthen our already strong community.”
