Description

The Aging / Allied Health Building was the first project undertaken by the University of Kentucky Medical Center with the stated goal of creating a gentler and more humane environment for their patients, students, staff, and faculty. The elegant brick and limestone exterior serve as a symbol that the medical center can have a human face.

The five-story, 195,000 gross square foot building unifies the College of Allied Health's eleven departments, which were previously dispersed, as well as the Medical Center's Office of the Chancellor and a 90-bed resident Nursing / Teaching Facility, in a plan which encourages the interaction so important to a teaching and research facility. In addition, the building provides one level of parking below grade.

Our work at the University of Kentucky Medical Center continued with the design of the adjacent Primary Care / Outpatient Diagnostic and Treatment Center, which includes the headquarters for the Gill Heart Institute on the first two floors and facilities for minimally-invasive surgery on the top three floors. We have taken advantage of the requirement for a pedestrian bridge between the two buildings to create a gateway to the medical campus.
