Description

The Bedford Family Center is a new state-of-the-art fitness and wellness center for the Westport Weston Family Y set into a hillside at the northeast corner of Mahackeno, a 32-acre campus north of town that was used primarily as a summer camp for over 60 years. Nestling the building into a remote corner of the site enhances public access to the shore of the Saugatuck River and preserves the existing camp and the woods, trails, and open spaces that surround it. The Bedford Family Center provides services and programs for people of all ages and abilities: a Child Watch with age-appropriate climbing equipment; an aquatics center with a 10-lane, 25-yard competition pool and a therapeutic warm-water recreational family pool; a gymnasium; meeting and activity rooms; and three exercise studios. The new building incorporates enlightened environmental systems that educate users about sustainable design strategies. Two new pavilions on the campgrounds offer cover for picnicking, arts and crafts, sports instruction, and other outdoor activities.
