Kiawah Island Beach Club
Kiawah Island, South Carolina, 1994
In contrast to the overscaled anonymity of most recent examples of this ubiquitous building type, our design capitalizes on the idea of shared domesticity implicit in the term “club-house.” A house-like pavilion accommodating a bar and dining room asserts a quiet yet definite presence amid the surrounding dunes. Deep covered porches shelter the interiors from the southern sun, while providing cool places for those who prefer to overlook the pool and ocean at a distance.
