2017 Travel Fellowship Winner Kyle Schumann Presents at RAMSA

2017 Travel Fellowship Winner Kyle Schumann Presents at RAMSA
Tonight the winner of the fifth annual RAMSA Travel Fellowship, Kyle Schumann, gave an evening presentation at RAMSA's offices. Mr. Schumann, a Master's candidate at Princeton University’s School of Architecture, was awarded $10,000 to fund travel to Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, where he studied the work of architects Jože Plečnik, Otto Wagner, Edoardo Gellner, and Edvard Ravnikar. Mr. Schumann investigated the strains of Alpine architecture that mediate modernism and regional tradition, researching the region’s architectural expressions at all scales, from small interiors to houses, civic structures, and urban planning schemes.

"Kyle's proposal made it easy for us to imagine how his travel and research would influence his education and career as an architect," said RAMSA Partner and Travel Fellowship jury member Grant F. Marani. "His research closely fits the spirit of the RAMSA Travel Fellowship and is extremely relevant to our firm's practice."

"The fellowship is an incredible opportunity in that it enables you to pursue research of personal interest," said 2017 RAMSA Fellow Kyle Schumann. "The fellowship has allowed me to form a base of knowledge that is relevant to my work in school and my thesis on regionalism in architecture."

The RAMSA Travel Fellowship is a $10,000 prize awarded annually by the Partners of Robert A.M. Stern Architects for the purpose of travel and research. More specifically, the Fellowship seeks to promote investigations of the perpetuation of tradition through invention – key to the firm’s own work. The prize is intended to nurture emerging talent and will be awarded to an individual who has proven insight and interest in the profession and its future, as well as the ability to carry forth the in-depth research proposed.
