Colgate's Benton Hall Named Green Building of The Year

Colgate's Benton Hall Named Green Building of The Year

The Benton Hall Career Services Building at Colgate University has been selected as "Green Building of the Year" by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) New York Upstate chapter and will be honored at the 2019 Friends of USGBC NY Upstate Gala + Leadership Awards on December 5. Completed in 2018, Robert A.M. Stern Architects' Benton Hall is Colgate's first building to be certified LEED Platinum.

Several factors helped make the 18,500-square-foot building one of the greenest in upstate New York. "The main determining factors were the robust envelope design, coupled with the building's efficient energy systems that cut overall consumption rates and increased visitor comfort and satisfaction with the space," said Joe Inman, a Project Manager at Colgate University. "The balance of the design focused on stormwater management, energy performance, the use of regional materials, and excellent indoor air quality."

Benton Hall, home to Colgate University's Center for Career Services, sits at the northeast corner of the historic Academic Quad on the University's Hamilton, New York campus. Visitors enter through a lower-level entrance facing Oak Drive; students enter through an entrance on the building's upper-level, facing the Quad. With locally-quarried bluestone and cast-stone accents rising to a slate roof, Benton Hall takes design cues from several neighboring campus structures: West Hall, Colgate's first building, and two historic Romanesque Colgate buildings, Hascall Hall and the James B. Colgate Admissions Building. RAMSA Partners Robert A.M. Stern, Graham S. Wyatt, and Preston J. Gumberich led the design effort. Robert A.M. Stern Architects has also designed two residence halls for Colgate, Jane Pinchin Hall and Burke Hall, completed in 2019.

USGBC NY Upstate is a vibrant community of individuals from across 55 counties in New York, interested in advocating, celebrating, and teaching green building. USGBC NY Upstate is a member of the USGBC, whose Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used third-party verification for green buildings. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues, obtaining one of four LEED rating levels based on the number of points achieved: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
