Residence Halls, The Hotchkiss School

During two early-twentieth century building campaigns, Hotchkiss was built in almost seamless fashion with a singular design expression to traditional designs by Bruce Price, Cass Gilbert, and Delano and Aldrich. During the 1960s, the school strayed from this tradition. Our designs for Flinn, Edelman, and Redlich halls return Hotchkiss to its architectural roots and historic character favored by its students, faculty, and trustees.

Flinn Hall and Edelman Hall each provides 29 student dormitory rooms with shared bathrooms, study rooms at each floor, a generous ground floor lounge with a fireplace opening to a terrace for student activities, and four faculty apartments with fireplaces and outdoor porches. Our three-story buildings keep to the prevailing scale of the campus by creating a central building framed with gambrel-roofed side wings housing the faculty apartments. The building materials reflect those of Hotchkiss's best existing buildings: fine brick details complement double-hung shuttered windows and inviting classical entry porticos.

Following on the completion of Flinn and Edelman residence halls in 2007, the Hotchkiss School called on us to design a third residence hall that, together with our earlier buildings, defines a new campus green. Redlich Hall carries forward the strategy of Flinn and Edelman Halls, bookending a red-brick central mass with faculty apartments in gambrel-roofed wings with porches, and continuing the palette of the campus’s historic buildings with double-hung windows, fine brick details, and inviting entry porticos. Corinthian-order detailing complements the Ionic and Doric orders of Flinn and Edelman Halls respectively. Redlich Hall provides 60 beds with shared bathrooms, study rooms on each floor, and a generous ground floor lounge opening to a terrace.
