Under construction, completion 2019
Our work at Choate Rosemary Hall proposes a new 45,000-square-foot auditorium adjacent to I.M. Pei’s 1972 Paul Mellon Arts Center. The auditorium is designed to be flexible in its programming and will serve as a place for regular school-wide meetings, as well as for orchestral and vocal performances. In addition to the auditorium and its support spaces, Colony Hall will house the school’s music and dance programs, working together with the Mellon Center to create an arts complex within the Choate campus. The design of the new building responds to the massive concrete forms of the Mellon Arts Center and completes the axis of the building’s large gateway, which was originally intended to symbolize the juncture between the boys’ and girls’ campuses, but whose meaning had been lost over time as the school committed to co-education.
