Melissa DelVecchio to Speak at the University of Miami

On November 11, 2019, Melissa DelVecchio, FAIA, Partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, will present "Building Communities: Expanding Yale's Residential College System" at the University of Miami School of Architecture's Glasgow Hall, as part of the School's Currents Lecture Series. The discussion will center on the development of Yale University's residential college system and the design and construction of Pauli Murray College and Benjamin Franklin College, both completed in 2017 working with Senior Partner Robert A.M Stern and Partner Graham Wyatt. Ms. DelVecchio led the design of the new colleges; she also co-edited the monograph The New Residential Colleges at Yale: A Conversation Across Time.

Yale’s residential colleges, modeled after the academic communities at Oxford and Cambridge, are the cornerstone of the University’s undergraduate life, breaking down the student body into smaller, more close-knit communities. Robert A.M. Stern Architects was charged with designing buildings that fit into the residential college system, and in so doing say “Yale”, while bringing twenty-first-century standards of communal living and environmental responsibility to college residential life. Benjamin Franklin College and Pauli Murray College, each housing 452 students, are conceived as fraternal twins, similar in size but each with its own identity.

Ms. DelVecchio is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, (B.Arch.), and Yale University (M.Arch.). Partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects since 2008, Ms. DelVecchio's work spans many different institutional building types, including student residences, libraries, classrooms, campus centers, and professional schools.
