Mapping Memory: The Reuse of Sicily’s Tuna Fisheries

Mapping Memory: The Reuse of Sicily’s Tuna Fisheries

Join us on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at 4:30PM for a presentation by 2022 RAMSA Fellow Giuliana Vaccarino Gearty.

Giuliana, a Master of Architecture candidate at the Tulane University School of Architecture, traveled to Syracuse, Palermo, and Trapani in Sicily to study the architectural styles and preservation techniques of eight tuna fisheries, known as tonnare. Her research explores “how these buildings have changed over time, both physically and symbolically, and the ways in which medieval industrial structures can be utilized and experienced in the present.”

The RAMSA Fellowship is a travel and research grant that promotes investigations into the perpetuation of tradition through invention. To learn more about the fellowship, visit www.ramsa.com/fellowship.
