Description

Benton Hall, the new 16,600-square-foot home of Colgate University's Center for Career Services, faces an important campus entry, mediating between the picturesque landscape of the school’s lower campus and the gridiron organization of the hilltop Academic Quadrangle. Facades of locally-quarried bluestone with cast stone accents and ornament rise to a traditional slate roof, recalling Colgate’s first building, West Hall (Daniel Hascall, 1827). Simple massing and robust Romanesque detailing recall Colgate’s historic Hascall Hall (C.B. Butler, 1884) and the James B. Colgate Admissions Building (Edwin A. Quick, 1891).

Visitors enter Benton Hall’s lower level through a formal entrance facing Oak Drive; students enter through a similar entrance facing the campus at the building’s upper level. By bringing together Career Services, the Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships, and the Thought Into Action entrepreneurship program’s administrative office under one roof, the new building allows Colgate to provide seamless postgraduate exploration and planning. Benton Hall features reception areas; administrative offices; suites for advising, employer relations, and interviews. Flexible public spaces such as the large Career Commons and Seminar Room, serves as hubs for networking events, information sessions, and entrepreneur team workshops, as well as academic classes, seminars, lectures, exhibitions, and performances. Incorporating the very latest technologies, the building has been designed to high standards of energy efficiency and performance and is LEED-Platinum certified.
