SCUP Recognizes Excellence in Yale’s Schwarzman Center Renovation

The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA-CAE) has announced that Robert A.M. Stern Architects' Schwarzman Center at Yale University has been recognized with an Honorable Mention for Excellence in Architecture for Building Additions, Renovation or Adaptive Reuse in its 2022 Excellence in Architecture Awards.

Constructed in 1901 and located between the former Yale College and Sheffield Scientific School, the Bicentennial Buildings merged those two communities and have long since stood as a symbol of unification and progress. Yale Schwarzman Center continues and expands this tradition, with a focus on bringing together undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as the wider Yale community – faculty, staff, and alumni – and guests from Yale’s host city of New Haven and beyond. Thanks to the efforts of the design team lead by RAMSA Partners Melissa DelVecchioJennifer L. Stone, and Graham S. Wyatt, this much-needed renovation has transformed a historic Yale landmark into a modern, active campus center for dining, performances, and events. The existing dining hall is joined by two new casual dining spaces and a pub, in addition to flexible performance spaces in Commons and in the renovated dome above the Rotunda.

The SCUP Excellence Awards recognize that excellence in comprehensive campus design and planning for higher education takes collaboration involving campus architects, planners, administrators, faculty, professional consultants, and many stakeholders. SCUP seeks to educate and enlighten planners, administrators, architects, and the general public about what constitutes successful planning and design for higher education.
