Join RAMSA Partner Melissa DelVecchio and Senior Associate Dennis Sagiev on October 18, 2020 at 8:00pm EST for a presentation about the design of Excellence Charter School in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. In 2006, RAMSA completed a restoration and addition to James W. Naughton’s 1880 gauged red brick and brownstone Public School 70, reviving a significant neighborhood institution. Abandoned in 1990 after a major fire, the building was exposed to the elements for approximately 13 years. In addition to restoring the building’s original symmetrical Patchen Avenue facade, RAMSA added a new wing using a similar palette of materials in a stylistically neutral way to highlight the historic school building. Excellence Charter School was a grantee of the Robin Hood Foundation and is now part of the Uncommon Schools network, which manages outstanding urban public charter schools to prepare students in low-income communities for college.
Melissa DelVecchio is a partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects. She is the design lead for many of the firm’s academic projects, and directs the Research Department. She is currently working on the adaptive reuse of the Schwarzman Center at Yale University, a historic Carrère & Hastings’ building that will be transformed into a social hub for students; and the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, the anchor for the University of Notre Dame’s new arts district.
Dennis Sagiev is a senior associate at Robert A.M. Stern Architects. He joined the firm in 1996 and has been involved in the design and management of many academic and institutional projects including the North Hall and Library at Bronx Community College; and the Kohler Environmental Center at Choate Rosemary Hall, a net-zero energy living-learning building. He is currently working on a 476-bed residence hall on the Capitol Campus for Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
