The University of Notre Dame announced today that after a rigorous national search Robert A.M. Stern Architects has been selected to design the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art. The firm brings to the project its experience with the design of museums including the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia; the George W. Bush Museum and Library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas; the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln; the Museum Center at the Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut; the Guild Hall of East Hampton, New York; and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The firm was also the architect for the Stayer Center for Executive Education at the University of Notre Dame, part of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, completed in 2013.
The 132,000-square-foot Raclin Murphy Museum of Art will be designed as a complex to be built in two phases. The first phase is anticipated to be approximately 70,000 square-feet and will house the museum galleries and other museum functions. Construction is scheduled to commence in June 2020 with an anticipated completion in 2022. Ernestine Raclin and her daughter and son-in-law Carmen and Chris Murphy are the lead benefactors. RAMSA Partners Robert A.M. Stern, Graham S. Wyatt, Melissa DelVecchio, and Preston J. Gumberich will lead the design effort.
