Description
Perched on a granite bluff overlooking Bear Island across the Eastern Way, a guest house and a squash house are the first phase of a residential compound on a magnificent site on Mount Desert Island in Maine. The structures and their related outdoor spaces were strategically sited along the western, downhill side of the site to create a buffer from the neighboring property and to maintain a large open setting at the highest part of the site for the main house planned for a later phase.
The buildings, which are slightly skewed in plan from one another, are organized around a pool and terrace to the south and a hedge-enclosed tennis court to the north. The pool runs parallel to the bluff and broadside to the squash house, which has a sitting area overlooking it. A curved, open porch at the eastern end of the squash house looks obliquely across the pool towards the mouth of Northeast Harbor.
