Designed as a sympathetic response to the massive concrete forms of I.M. Pei’s 1972 Paul Mellon Arts Center, our new 45,000-square-foot Colony Hall combines a 1,070-seat auditorium designed to serve as a setting for regular school-wide meetings, as well as for orchestral and vocal performances, with support spaces for the school’s music and dance programs; together with the Mellon Center it creates an arts complex within the Choate campus. Colony Hall completes the axis of the Mellon Center's monumental gateway, which was originally intended to symbolize the juncture between separate boys' and girls' campuses, but whose meaning had been lost over time as the school fully committed to co-education.
The building is LEED Gold certified.
