Sargent Gardiner on Repurposing Sites for Housing Conversion

In an op-ed for Urban Land, the magazine of the Urban Land Institute, RAMSA Partner Sargent Gardiner shares how underused sites can be repurposed to address housing needs while enhancing the vitality of our communities.

As a prime example, RAMSA converted a former college campus in a historic neighborhood into The Newbury of Brookline: the type of senior living development that strengthens the community and offers additional benefits like “generating local jobs, increasing the tax base, and allowing residents to age in the neighborhoods they love.”

In another example, he discussed how the Union Theological Seminary leveraged its air rights and erected Claremont Hall, a 41-story residential tower in Upper Manhattan. He writes: "The insertion of new residential density into this area...has injected new residential vitality into nearby streets outside school hours."
