One Mayfair, a seven-story apartment house, replaces a postwar parking garage in Mayfair Village. The RAMSA design team, led by Lobitz, sought to restore the scale and rhythm of the historic neighborhood—a charming mix of brick, stone, and stucco townhouses and apartment buildings from various eras—and have created a new public plaza on South Audley Street.
“One Mayfair is rich in both memory and optimism . . . There’s an absence of intricacy in most modern architecture,” Stern says. “That’s what we are addressing, here, in New York and in London. This is an architecture filled with the devices that enliven a building, that give something for the eyes to look at. Modernism was the erasure of detail. Well, we’re putting it back.”
